Advanced skills for the CDR Data Technician
This course offers the previously trained and experienced CDR System Technician an opportunity to acquire advanced skills in the methods of retrieving crash data stored in supported modules by overcoming issues and difficulties caused by damage in collisions.
Being able to troubleshoot in-car issues and problems and work around those problems to enable a CDR System data download while taking into consideration evidentiary issues and personal safety are important to the well-rounded CDR Technician. The class will examine the components, locations and how to identify systems such as: ABS, ESC, throttle-by-wire, electric power steering, remote tire pressure sensors and more. The three day class includes hands-on experience and exercises with vehicles critical components, multi-meters, scantools and other necessary equipment, tools and reference material to provide the student with an opportunity to put into practice the skills learned in the classroom, including examining the vehicle systems, selecting the appropriate method of powering the vehicle and actually collecting data using the methods taught.
At the end of this course, a Technician would be expected to be able to image and preserve data from situations that go beyond a straight forward DLC or benchtop download in a format such that the CDR Data Analyst would be able to use that collected data together with a situationally complete reconstruction. Successful completion of an approved CDR Technician course is a required prerequisite for this course. This goes beyond "there's the DLC, set up the CDR system and turn on the key." This class goes to the heart of "why isn't there power at the DLC?" What can I do if the fuse box is destroyed in the crash?" "How do I make my own cable' for those not currently available?"
Course topics include:
Basic multi-meter skills and applications
Examining the collision damaged vehicle and selecting alternate methods of accessing the supported modules
Safely "back-powering" the vehicle and module(s)
Direct access to the vehicle wiring system
Making your own cable where an umbilical cable is not available
Resources for and how to read OEM service information including schematic and wiring diagrams
The proper use of "scan tools" for troubleshooting and to detect DTCs
Examination of vehicles to assist the CDR Technician to determine the vehicle has the "if equipped" critical vehicle systems
Class size is limited to ensure adequate hands-on and student-instructor interaction during practical exercises with tools, simulators, project boards and actual cars set up to simulate some of the real world problems the Technician might encounter in the field.
